Some relationships are thicker than blood. They are built not by birth, but by shared values, lived experiences, and a deep resonance of purpose. One such priceless relationship in my life is with Shailaja Teacher – former Health Minister and current Member of the Legislative Assembly of Kerala. Every moment I spend with her feels like sitting beside a Bodh Buddha – a quiet yet profound awakening. Conversations with her are not just discussions; they are masterclasses in leadership, compassion, and clarity. Through her lived experiences during the Nipah outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, I have gained a deeper understanding of the true dynamics of healthcare – far beyond textbooks or boardroom strategies.
She speaks with humility about immense challenges: managing fragile systems under pressure, aligning teams, supporting doctors, addressing patient anxieties, and handling the emotional turbulence of families during crises. Her insights reveal how healthcare leadership is not only about policies and protocols, but about courage, empathy, and unwavering presence in the face of uncertainty.
The last four days spent with her in Hyderabad were truly enriching. It was a great honour to host her at Pranaam Hospitals, where she interacted with our team. Her visit was not merely ceremonial. It was deeply motivational. Watching her connect effortlessly with people at every level reminded us that true leadership inspires without authority and influences through authenticity.
Despite the heights she has scaled, her humility, affection, and grounded nature stand out the most. She constantly reinforces a timeless truth: no matter how high we climb, we must remain firmly rooted. Her love and warmth feel maternal – a bond akin to that of a mother and daughter – nurturing, energizing, and deeply reassuring. Every meeting with her leaves me renewed, more purposeful, and eager to learn. She has been an inspiration to me ever since I witnessed her fearless leadership during the Nipah and COVID-19 crises. That inspiration continues to grow.
Books give us knowledge. Systems give us structure. But associating with great people gives us wisdom -born from experience, sacrifice, and service.
Love you deeply, Teacheramma. There is still so much to learn, and even more to share.
